Moisture-Resistant Drywall for Las Vegas Bathrooms: Which Type Do You Need?

You had a bathroom leak and the repair contractor cut out the damaged drywall. Now you have a choice: put back standard drywall, or upgrade to moisture-resistant drywall. Here is what Las Vegas homeowners need to know about the different types of moisture-resistant drywall, when each type is the right call, and why it matters more in some Las Vegas homes than others.

Why Standard Drywall Fails in Wet Areas

Standard drywall is made from a gypsum core sandwiched between paper facing. Gypsum and paper are both porous and absorb moisture readily. In a bathroom, laundry room, or kitchen, steam, splashing, and humidity cycles weaken the paper facing, soften the gypsum core, and create conditions where mold grows. Once standard drywall gets wet repeatedly, it loses structural integrity and has to be replaced.

Las Vegas’s dry climate gives a false sense of security. The outdoor air is dry, but enclosed bathroom and kitchen spaces generate significant moisture. A shower running for 15 minutes generates more humidity than most homeowners realize, especially in smaller bathrooms with limited ventilation.

Types of Moisture-Resistant Drywall

Green Board (Water-Resistant Drywall)

Green board is standard drywall with a water-resistant paper facing and a slightly modified gypsum core. It is identifiable by its green facing paper. Green board resists incidental moisture and humidity better than standard drywall, but it is not waterproof and should not be used in direct-contact wet areas like shower surrounds or tub enclosures.

Green board is appropriate for bathroom walls outside the shower or tub area, laundry rooms, utility rooms, and other areas with elevated humidity but no direct water contact. It costs moderately more than standard drywall and is widely available at Las Vegas hardware stores.

Purple Board (Enhanced Moisture and Mold Resistance)

Purple board is a step up from green board. It uses a non-paper facing made of fiberglass mat or a treated paper, with a gypsum core that includes mold-resistant additives. Purple board resists both moisture and mold more effectively than green board and is suitable for higher-humidity bathroom walls, ceilings, and areas adjacent to shower enclosures.

For Las Vegas bathrooms where ventilation is poor or where the bathroom gets heavy use, purple board is worth the additional cost over green board.

Cement Board (for Direct Tile Applications)

Cement board — also sold as Durock, HardieBacker, and similar brands — is not drywall at all. It is a cement and aggregate panel designed to be a substrate for tile in wet areas. Shower surrounds, tub enclosures, and floor tile installations all typically use cement board as the backer, not drywall of any type.

If you are replacing drywall in a shower surround or tub enclosure, the correct material is cement board plus a waterproofing membrane, not green board or purple board. Drywall products of any type are not designed for tile installation in continuously wet environments.

Fiberglass Mat Drywall (DensArmor, etc.)

Fiberglass mat drywall uses a fiberglass facing instead of paper. The fiberglass mat does not support mold growth the way paper does. These products are commonly used in high-performance moisture applications and in commercial construction. For residential Las Vegas bathrooms, they represent a premium option that is more durable than green or purple board but comes at a higher cost and is less common at local suppliers.

Code Requirements in Las Vegas

Clark County and the City of Las Vegas adopt the International Residential Code (IRC). Under the IRC, water-resistant gypsum backing board (ASTM C1396) is required in areas within 2 feet of a sink or tub where the wall will not be tiled. For tiled shower and tub enclosures, a cementitious backer unit or an approved alternative must be used. Using standard drywall in these areas does not meet code requirements for permitted work.

For repair work that does not require a permit, code enforcement is not actively checking. But installing the correct material is still the right choice — it affects how long the repair lasts and whether moisture problems return.

Moisture-Resistant Drywall Questions Answered

Can I tile directly over green board or purple board?

Industry standards and tile manufacturers do not recommend tiling over green board or standard purple board in wet areas like showers. The moisture from grout, adhesive, and ongoing use eventually penetrates the facing and degrades the gypsum core even on moisture-resistant products. Cement board or a similar approved substrate is the correct choice under tile in wet areas.

Does green board prevent mold?

Green board resists mold better than standard drywall because of its water-resistant facing, but it does not prevent mold if the panel stays wet for extended periods. True mold resistance requires a product where the core itself contains mold-inhibiting additives, such as purple board or fiberglass mat products. Green board is a moisture-resistance upgrade, not a mold prevention solution.

How much more does moisture-resistant drywall cost in Las Vegas?

Green board costs modestly more than standard drywall per sheet. Purple board and fiberglass mat products cost more still. For a typical bathroom repair involving a few sheets, the difference is not large. For a full bathroom remodel, the upgrade cost is minor relative to the total project cost and the durability improvement it provides.

My contractor wants to put regular drywall in my bathroom after a water repair. Should I be concerned?

For bathroom walls outside the immediate shower or tub zone, standard drywall is better than nothing but green board or purple board is the right choice. If a contractor is putting standard drywall directly in a shower surround or tub enclosure area, that is a code violation and will fail prematurely. Ask them specifically what product they are using and why, and compare it to the table above.
