Your drywall was patched — now can you paint directly over it? No, not without priming first. Joint compound absorbs paint at a different rate than painted wall surfaces, causing visible “flashing.” Here’s the correct process to get a repair that disappears.
Why Priming Is Required
When paint is applied directly to bare joint compound, the compound absorbs it faster than the painted wall around it. The result is a dull, flat-looking patch that stands out no matter how many coats of paint you add. This is called flashing, and primer is the only fix.
The 4 Steps After Drywall Repair
1. Let compound dry completely. In Las Vegas, joint compound dries in 8–12 hours. It turns from dark gray to a uniform light color. Never prime over damp sections.
2. Sand feathered edges smooth. Use 120–150 grit sandpaper so the repair blends with the surrounding wall. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth.
3. Apply PVA drywall primer. PVA primer seals porous compound and equalizes absorption. Dry time is 30–60 minutes in Las Vegas conditions.
4. Paint normally. Use the same paint as the surrounding wall. Rolling the entire wall gives the most uniform finish.
