What Type of Drywall Is Best for Las Vegas Climate?
Las Vegas’s desert climate creates specific challenges for drywall: extreme heat, very low humidity, and monsoon moisture in summer. The right drywall choice depends on where in the house you’re installing it and what conditions that area faces.
Standard Drywall (1/2 Inch) – Most Interior Walls
For most interior walls and ceilings in air-conditioned spaces, standard 1/2 inch drywall is the right choice. Las Vegas’s low humidity means regular drywall faces less moisture stress than it would in humid climates. Standard drywall handles the dry desert air fine in living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways.
5/8 Inch Type X – Garages and Fire-Rated Assemblies
The wall between your garage and living space must be fire-rated. In Las Vegas homes, this means 5/8 inch Type X drywall. Type X is denser and contains fiberglass reinforcement that slows fire spread. Nevada Residential Code requires this for garage-to-living-space separations. Any hole or damage in your garage-to-house wall must be repaired with Type X material, not regular 1/2 inch drywall.
Moisture-Resistant Drywall (Green Board) – Bathrooms
Standard drywall fails quickly in bathrooms because the paper facing absorbs moisture and grows mold. Moisture-resistant drywall (green board) has a water-resistant gypsum core. Use it in bathrooms for walls outside the direct wet zone. Las Vegas has hard water that accelerates pipe corrosion, making moisture-resistant board especially important.
Cement Board – Shower and Tub Surrounds
Directly behind tile in showers and tub surrounds, neither standard drywall nor green board is sufficient. Cement board (HardieBacker or similar) is dimensionally stable when wet and provides a proper base for tile in high-moisture zones.
Las Vegas Extreme Heat and Drywall
Uninsulated garage walls face temperatures exceeding 130 degrees F in summer. Standard drywall handles this heat without structural failure, but thermal cycling causes screw pops and corner cracking over time. We use setting-type compound in high-heat areas and ensure fasteners are properly countersunk before finishing.
